Until recently the function of butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and its role in the regulation of acetylcholine levels in the CNS have been ignored. Now there is growing evidence that BuChE plays an important role in the brain cholinergic system and that it may also have a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
